It’s old news by now, but in case you hadn’t heard, a series of events has lead us to decide that Narrowing Type will be our last release as Good Night & Good Morning. New things are in the works, but expect it to be different. Thanks to everyone who came out to our final show with The Appleseed Cast, that was an unforgettable night. With that said, we’re honored to have had some nice things said about our album on this Top 50 albums of 2012 list.

Edging out Caspian for post-rock record of the year and Young Jesus for best Chicago record, Narrowing Type is a masterclass on tone, atmosphere, dynamic, and mood. No record sang me to sleep more this year than this little record from Good Night & Good Morning. Everything I love about post-rock is not only referenced but made a focal point in at least two spots throughout this record. From the gentle vocals to the brilliant (and tastefully restrained) crescendos, there’s not a lacking moment. From start to finish, there’s something here to hold onto that only drags you further into the songs themselves, miniature masterpieces to get lost in. Through its seven tracks, it creates a world so complete and so compelling that every time I passed it by en route to another record, I was tempted to just stop and listen to this one instead. Painfully gorgeous.”

Rvins + Good Night & Good Morning collab preorders

Hello Tumblrs, back in February we got together with our good friends in Rvins (a sludge/post-metal/our ex-roommate’s band from Champaign) for a weekend of writing and recording just to see what would happen when we blended our styles. The result was a near-15 minute track of doom-meets-drone. It’s being released on a limited edition white cassette on Sept. 15th via Error Records with a B-side that I recorded using found sounds during my 6-month stay in Shanghai. Houtakker just released their self-titled, debut album yesterday and let me tell you: it’s in the running for my favorite album of the year. Bandleader Joey Murphy was kind enough to send me an advance copy a couple months ago (OK, I practically begged him for a copy) and it’s been in constant rotation ever since. Here’s what he said about the album:

From the very beginning, Houtakker was meant to be an outlet for songs that I didn’t think had a home anywhere else. I worked on them alone, and sent them out to my friends. Somewhere along the line someone asked me to play a show, so naturally I asked some of my favorite Chicago musicians to join me. In the last year we have managed to turn it into a real “working band” thanks to the encouragement of friends, musicians, and the dedication of my bandmates Justin, Paul and Matt. I especially want to thank anyone who has taken time out of their day to listen to these songs, or come out to one of our shows. We love you.

Seeing as how this is a compilation of songs from the past four years, this album had to be named Houtakker. Anything other than self-titled would feel trite. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I enjoyed making them.

Houtakker is also playing at Township today from 5:30-8:00pm. Joey’s backing band will be Cains & Abels at this show, which is part of Cains & Abels’ month-long Heat Beaters happy hour residency.
